Transforming Into a Leader

Olympia Chapter Leader Mikhail Stewart Olympia Chapter Leader Mikhail Stewart

The meaning of life is different to every single individual. My definition of life is, “Change.” We experience change every minute of every day of month of every year. It’s neverending and the fact that we can never stay the same is terrifyingly beautiful.

The year of 2013 has swept in many different changes. Currently, within my own personal life I’m transitioning from a girl into a young woman. Having turned 21 in August, I finally watched myself pass over the legal line into adulthood. Even more incredible is the transition emotionally and mentally as I broke free of my adolescent mind frame and entered into a world of a new thinking that is weighed with new responsibilities. This was something I found very difficult as most times only 10% of change is actually visible, while the other 90% is under the surface of your projected character. It’s of vital importance to work through the 90%, and as I explore the depths of my new brain, I begin to turn one single thought over and over in my mind, “What am I going to do for the rest of my life?”

Mockingbird took me under their wings at the beginning of September, and since then I’ve experienced the most amazing journey of self-discovery I never knew I’d be on. As I began falling in love with the incredible organization that had changed my life, I decided that I wanted to invest my life in political work. Searching for ways to expand myself while gaining new leadership qualities and experience that would be useful when pursuing a career. I decided to apply for one of the Olympia Chapter Leadership positions.

After a lengthy interview process with two other phenomenal candidates, Crystal Jones and I were both chosen to transition ourselves from chapter members, to chapter leaders. A rollercoaster of emotions ran high as we said farewell to the previous chapter leader, James Murphy who had represented the entire Olympia Chapter alone for quite a period of time, to stepping into the thrilling leadership position that we would both have for the next year.

As I step into this new chapter in my life (yes, pun intended), I also take the time to step inside myself and dwell on the emotions of saying goodbye to the old cocoon of my life. I prepare to spread my wings and let myself transform into the powerful leader and woman I’ve been waiting my whole life to become. This is the first step to the start of a new change.

As we transition into the New Year with new chapter leaders, we give our thank you’s and farewells to the old year and our old Chapter Leaders. All change and transition is equally as important as the past and future, the only importance is to continue the legacy of world changing advocacy.
